Reality of egg donation

I really like the idea of helping someone out if she cannot conceive on her own, or if it is physically impossible. But I do not agree with not doing complete investigative reporting.

In Heather Cope's article "Offering Motherhood" (June 2), she mentioned that "Heather" had responded to her first egg-donation ad in the summer of 2002 after much thought and research. But she did not mention what kind of research she or the egg donor did.

Did she talk with other egg donors or did she search on the Web? Did she talk to doctors in the field about side effects of hormone shots to boost egg production? Did she mention to you about the higher chances of breast cancer in young women who go through these procedures only once, let alone three times?

Cope's article glamorized a very dangerous procedure. Albeit, a wonderful life-giving procedure, it is still dangerous. Cope did mention the possibility of the donors becoming infertile after donations, but did not mention other health risks.

I am afraid a lot of college girls are going to look into this money-making thing over the summer, without researching it first, because a girl named "Heather" had already researched it for them, according to Cope's article. In the article are all the pros, but no cons -- aside from a little bloating and soreness. If this egg donor thought that was bad, wait until she looses a breast to cancer.
