Board of Directors wraps up year with final bill actions

The outgoing Board of Directors met last night for its last meeting before the end of classes and, for some, graduation. Board members passed bills and resolutions while reflecting on the past and looking toward their future in and outside of ASUW.

A Student Senate resolution was amended and passed by the board last night concerning the Campus Link kiosk in the HUB. It proved to be the most contentious piece of legislation.

The resolution says students should be consulted before space that could be used to promote student-sponsored activities is converted into space unusable for students. The resolution cites a Washington Administrative Code barring University facilities from using space for private commercial purposes as an important reason to pass the resolution.

Director Chris Corry, however, motioned to veto the resolution after questioning its relevance and accuracy.

"I feel like [this resolution] is more of an attack on what happened," Corry said. "This has nothing to do with student use of the HUB."

According to the resolution, the Board of Directors in 2001 approved the kiosk with free-access computers, sponsor advertising and spaces for the HUB administrators to advertise student events.

Some board members thought vetoing a resolution of student opinion after the Student Senate had adjourned showed an underhanded management of legislation.

Concern stemmed from the senate's new power to override a board veto of senate resolutions with a two-thirds vote.

Also at last night's meeting, a bill changing the bylaws to give more access to special appropriations money to student clubs underwent amendments before approval.

Board members slightly adjusted the procedures for registered student organizations to request funds by requiring them to be registered for two instead of three years to request funds between $1,500 and $4,000.

According to board member Sam Castic, the changes will cut bureaucracy.

Though the board is scheduled to meet Thursday at its regular time to discuss personnel issues, members discussed their future plans and gave farewell addresses in their weekly reports.
