Parting shots: Alex Sundby
June 4, 2004
I knew I would spend most of my college experience in the Communications Building before I met anyone at The Daily and before I knew anything about journalism. I've spent more time in the newsroom than I'd care to admit, but it's where I've learned the most at UW.
If you think working here is easy, it's not. Being news editor and editor in chief were the most difficult tasks I took on at the UW. Put simply, they leave little time to do such things as go swimming weeknights. Well, that's if you take the job seriously.
Randy Trick and Adam Karlin are responsible for my longevity here, so if you don't like what I've done, blame them. Randy brought me into The Daily when I was a freshman. Adam faced the arduous task of teaching me how to write news a year later. Randy has always been willing to offer his expertise. Someday I will ask him for a job. Adam is the best roommate I had in college and a good friend, even though he owes me about $900.
I have no doubt Kathleen Belew will entertain her future doctoral students with knock-knock jokes about Interrupting Cow. Thanks for giving me my first wall quote.
Kristin Henderson and Dylan Lee Lehrke provided models of leadership I tried to mimic when I was editor in chief last quarter. It's no wonder they're working in Washington, D.C.
Heather Cope will join them soon, I'm sure. Good luck in the fall. Kyle Arnold had to face my high expectations as my news editor and is a better softball coach than I.
Brian Alexander gets my thanks for turning the Web site into something people can actually use. Have fun as summer editor.
Ingrid Anderson is one of the kindest people I've met. I'm sure she'll like me more for not calling her boss anymore. Morgan Benson has never complained to me about my picky questions about writing style or staying late to edit my copy. I regret not being able to swim in Drumheller with you two.
Brian Stryker and Jimmy So taught me that photos tell a story. Jimmy let me put Giants scores in my sports section. I hope to work with Chris Jordan at National Geographic someday.
Jimmy and Matthew Chernicoff are the most gracious party hosts I've come across in college. Matt is one of the best storytellers I've met. Nathan Fowler could always make me laugh, regardless of my mood. Bryant Worthing has given me more compliments than anyone outside my family.
Raven Avery made my papers look pretty. I owe her a cake. Christina Siderius is a woman with a vision. It showed in her features section. Maureen Trantham is the most impressive freshman I've met. Lauren Graf is generous and caring. Monika Jones can do anything she puts her mind to. Thanks for the dances.
Nate Robinson will win a Pulitzer Prize before I submit an entry. Hilary Maynard and I will always argue about ethics. Brian Turner has a lot of talent and reporting ability. I still need to see one of his gigs.
Oren Campbell is one of the people I respect most.
If I were still in charge, this would be much longer. Instead I am a humble reporter who doesn't want this story to end. Thanks all.
