Staff editorial: HFS leaves us hungry

With all the recent improvements made to on-campus dining and all the "many options offered students," why is it hard to find a place to eat after 5 p.m.?

It is the duty of Housing and Food Services (HFS) to provide all students with convenient and affordable access to food. But current eateries are geared toward dormitory residents -- a group that comprises only 5,300 students during the school year. The remaining 32,000 potential diners who pass through campus daily are hungry for more than HFS offers.

While the summer population of the UW drops by nearly one-half, this does not mean that access to food should drop as well. Procuring a meal on campus in the late evening hours is limited to Ian's Domain mini-market.

The University is in the process of a $4.2 million revamp Terry Cafe, which will open during fall term as Eleven 01. Though aesthetically pleasing for south-campus residents, this significant investment would be better used to increase access to food for all individuals on campus throughout the day.

HFS's strategic master plan has invested $20 million to revamp food on campus; however, this has taken place largely as an improvement in atmosphere and selection as opposed to an improvement in value and access. Hours remain limited, costs remain equal to or more than that of local commercial restaurants, and we're still hungry.
