New UW regent appointed
August 11, 2004
Fred Kiga, director of corporate and government relations for the Russell Investment Group, became the newest UW regent after being appointed by Gov. Gary Locke on Aug. 4.
Kiga will take the place of Ark Chin, whose term as UW regent ended in September 2003. Chin, a Chinese-American immigrant, was president of the Board of Regents during the 2001-02 year. He continued to serve as regent during the search for his replacement. Regents are appointed for six-year terms by the state governor.
Kiga is no stranger to UW, having received his B.A. in business from the UW in 1974. He returned for law school, earning a J.D. in 1978 and an M.B.A. in 1980.
Kiga served as Locke's chief of staff from 2001 to 2003, when he left Olympia to join the Tacoma-based Russell firm. Kiga was also Locke's revenue director from 1997 to 2001 and has held an executive position at Washington Mutual Bank. He has experience in coordinating budgets, operations and policies regarding economic development in education.
