Denny Hall bell tower removed

The Denny bell tower, which sat on top of Denny Hall for generations, was taken down Thursday for restoration purposes.

Denny Hall is undergoing a massive re-roofing project currently, so the bell tower was removed for its protection and repair. The University hopes that the roof will be complete for the bell to be placed back atop Denny Hall in time for its traditional Homecoming chime.

A giant crane that took two hours to piece together was used to remove the bell tower. It then was transferred to a truck that drove it up to a warehouse in Everett where it will begin the restoration process.

The bell was removed from the bell tower some time ago and currently sits in the plant services building while it is being tested to determine how it can best be preserved. X-rays will be taken of the bell to determine the extent of damage it contains and then decisions will be made on the restoration plans.

Depending upon the results of the tests and repairs, the bell will either be returned to the bell tower once the tower is replaced or placed on display inside Denny Hall.

Denny Hall was the first building to be built on the University campus after it moved from its original location in downtown Seattle. It contains many different departments, including anthropology and classics.
