Former Husky crew star returns as coach

UW crew coach Bob Ernst announced the men's freshman crew coach Friday, and it's a name Husky crew fans will remember.

Michael Callahan, who rowed for Washington from 1993-96, will assume the post when the Olympic Games end later this month. Callahan is an alternate on the U.S. rowing team in Athens, Greece.

As a varsity rower, Callahan led teams to the Pac-10 varsity championship all three years he was on the squad, from 1994-96. In 1996, Callahan was the team's captain and earned All-Pac-10 status.

This is Callahan's second return to the UW crew team. In 2001, he served as the Huskies' varsity men's intern coach and boathouse manager.

Callahan will be the team's primary recruiting coordinator in addition to coaching the men's freshman boats.
