Swimming faces Simon Fraser
January 28, 2005
Washington swimming hosts its first meet since October when it faces Simon Fraser in a dual meet tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The Huskies have not competed since Jan. 15 when both the men and women swam against Arizona and Northwestern in a tri-meet in Tucson, Ariz.
The UW women (9-2) defeated No. 24 Northwestern 172-168.5 and fell to No. 4 Arizona 200-138. The Huskies won six events, with junior Sharon Olson placing first in the 200-yard and 1000-yard freestyles. Olson also swam on the winning 4x400-yard medley relay team.
Other Husky winners included freshman Caitlyn Shortt in the 200-yard individual medley, Senior Desiree Johnson in the 100-yard backstroke and Senior Anissa Hilyard in the 200-yard butterfly.
The UW men (7-4) fell to both Wildcats, losing to No. 5 Arizona 263-67 and No. 15 Northwestern 253-79. Washington was shorthanded as four members of the squad did not travel to Tucson due to illness.
Senior Craig Gillis posted the Huskies best finish, placing third in the 200-yard butterfly.
Simon Fraser is the defending NAIA national champion -- the women's fifth straight, the men's second. The SFU women lost its first dual meet in six years Dec. 1 to British Columbia, it first loss since falling to Washington in 1998.
Washington's next meet is Feb. 5 when it travels across the Pacific to battle Hawaii.
