Athletes' ball shut down early

The UW student athletes' "Playa's Ball" was shut down early Saturday night after several intoxicated students were removed from the scene in ambulances, according to Tom Burke, the night audit supervisor at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Seattle.

The ball, which was intended to give student athletes a night of fun and recognition, ended instead with students passed out, vomiting and being taken to the hospital, said Burke.

"There was a little vomiting going on, a couple of girls getting propped up by their boyfriends -- that kind of thing," he said.

The ball was scheduled to run from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., but the dance ended around 11:30 p.m., said Burke.

According to Burke, the hotel did not tell anyone from the UW that they were behaving irresponsibly or were too drunk.

"I didn't really think it was that bad," said Burke. "It [was] just kids having a good time."

In the invitation sent out to student athletes, attendees were encouraged to be on their best behavior.

"Remember, you and your guest will be representing the University of Washington's Athletic Department ... please act appropriately," it read.

The dance was sponsored by the Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

Representatives of the UW's athletics department and the University did not return calls for comment yesterday.
