Men's tennis defeats Spartans, Lobos

The Washington men's tennis team defeated both New Mexico and Michigan State last weekend in Seattle

The No. 22 Huskies (4-0 overall) beat the No. 55 Spartans 6-1 yesterday.

Senior Alex Vlaski started with a 6-4, 6-1 sweep of No. 102 Andrew Formancyzk in No. 1 singles.

Last Friday, Washington defeated No. 65 New Mexico 5-2.

The UW lost the doubles point, but won the contest by taking five of six singles matches The last three spots on the Huskies lineup lost only three games against the Lobos.

Washington returns to action hosting the Great Northwest Shootout Feb. 3 through 5.

Women's tennis blanks Bulldogs, Broncos

The Washington women's tennis teams blanked both Gonzaga and Boise State 7-0 last weekend in Seattle.

The No. 10 Huskies (4-0 overall) have won every singles point this season after besting BSU yesterday. Senior Dea Sumantri, ranked No. 13, lead the way, beating Megan Bjorkman 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 singles

Last Friday, the Huskies played without Sumantri, but her services were not required as no UW player lost a single set in defeating Gonzaga.

Hadzic played No. 1 singles for the first time in her career, and bested Amanda Becker 6-4, 6-3.

The Huskies participate in the National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc., starting Thursday.

Huskies sink Simon Fraser

Washington swimming dominated defending NAIA national champions Simon Fraser last Saturday at Husky Pool, as the UW men's squad stomped the Clan 159-98 and the No. 24 Husky women defeated SFU 138-85.

Freshman Peter Wicklund won the 200-and 500-yard freestyles while freshman Jake Salaz won the 100-and 200-yard breaststroke and freshman Bruno Barbic won the 50-and 100-yard freestyles

The UW women won the first nine events before swimming the last five as exhibition.

Junior Sharon Olson won the 1,650-yard freestyle in the team's fastest time of the season.

The Huskies will cross a lot of water this weekend as both teams travel to Honolulu to compete against Hawaii Saturday.
