Former Husky player, coach leads Oregon against UW
October 28, 2005
The apprentice will face the master when ex-Husky standout Tara Erickson, now the head coach at University of Oregon, leads her squad against her alma mater tonight at 7 p.m.
Erickson played for UW coach Lesle Gallimore for two years and was an assistant coach from 1996 to 1998. As a player, Erickson left her mark in UW soccer history; her 27 career goals still rank third of all time.
"Tara is a hard working coach," said Gallimore. "She was an intelligent player, and that translated into coaching. I'm excited to see her."
Tonight's match against the Ducks (8-6-1 overall, 0-5 Pac-10) marks the beginning of the final home stand for the Huskies (0-14-03 overall, 0-6 Pac-10). The beleaguered team will attempt to get its first win in its final three games, all of which will be played at home.
"We are happy to finish up at home," said Gallimore. "We're a very young team, we're learning as much as possible."
With matches against ranked teams behind them, including games against No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Portland and No. 4 UCLA, a young Husky team will face an Oregon team with an equally bad record in the Pac-10. Both teams are winless in conference competition.
The Huskies have never lost to Oregon, boasting an 8-0-1 record against the Ducks, but a dismal season for the Huskies has put both teams on the same level.
But the Huskies are still holding their heads high. During the past few weeks, the team has worked hard to improve their lack of offense, and it has worked. The team has created more opportunities in front of the goal, said Gallimore.
"Now we need to convert those opportunities into goals," added Gallimore.
Nicole Garbin leads the Duck attack with nine goals and goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield has posted six shutouts on the season.
On Sunday, the Huskies play Oregon State University (9-5-1, 2-2-1), another team joining the Huskies at the bottom of the Pac-10. Sophomore Whitney Goodell, who was named last week's Pac-10 Player of the Week after scoring two goals against Oregon last weekend, leads the Beavers.
"Our hearts are positive," said Gallimore. "We hope to finish in a good note."
