One goal defeats plague Huskies over the weekend
October 31, 2005
The number "one" is becoming too familiar for the UW women's soccer team, and it has nothing to do with its standing in the Pac-10.
Yesterday's 1-0 loss to Oregon State University (10-6-1overall, 3-3-1 Pac-10) marked the ninth time the University of Washington (0-16-3, 0-8-0) has lost by that close score, and the 12th time the team has lost by one goal.
OSU's Stacey Mescher scored the lone goal at the 11:01 mark off a breakaway assisted by Jodie Taylor. Mescher's scoring shot was one of just four the Beavers were able to produce off a solid Husky defense.
But like the eight games before, one goal proved too much for the UW.
Even an improved Husky offense that out-shot the Beavers 20-6, was not enough. Coach Lesle Gallimore emphasized an improvement on scoring in preparation for the weekend, but the Huskies' efforts fell short.
"We created plenty of chances and just can't seem to put one away," said Gallimore to gohuskies.com. "We're going to keep training this week and try to go get the Cougs on Friday night in our last game."
The Huskies have now lost eight games in a row.
On Friday, former UW player and assistant coach Tara Erickson got her first Pac-10 victory at the expense of her alma mater as the University of Oregon (10-6-1, 2-5) defeated the Huskies 1-0.
The Ducks snapped a five-game losing streak with the win over Washington.
At the 35:23 mark, Nicole Garbin scored the goal that doomed the Huskies when her shot to the corner cleared Husky goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen. Like Sunday's game the Huskies could not regroup offensively to even the score.
"The bummer is that we knew that Nicole Garbin is their goal scorer," said Gallimore. "We came out kind of lax and gave up a ball in the midfield that we shouldn't give up. They played one into her and she spins us for a goal that just never should have happened."
Washington's offense bested the Duck attack by more than five shots, but none found the back of the net.
Friday's game against Washington State University is the last game of the season and the last chance for the Huskies' first and only win.
