A car chase that looped through campus yesterday afternoon ended with an arrest near downtown Seattle.

The incident began at 12:40 p.m. at an apartment complex near Northeast 50th Street and Brooklyn Avenue when an apartment manager flagged down two Seattle Police Department officers on bicycles, SPD spokesperson Rich Pruitt said. The manager was concerned about a vehicle that had been idling in the complex with its engine on for more than an hour.

As officers approached the car, one of the passengers inside scrambled into the driver's seat and jolted the car forward, nearly hitting one of the policemen, Pruitt said. The vehicle, a white 2006 Dodge Durango, took off, eventually careening through the UW campus where it attracted the attention of the UWPD, which was unable to force the driver to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle and its driver were apprehended at Denny Avenue and Fairview Avenue at 1:48 p.m., more than an hour after officers originally received the complaint.

The driver had a warrant out for his arrest in another city, and could be charged with traffic crimes, Pruitt said. Police are also looking into allegations that the vehicle was stolen.
