Resolution in favor of late-night coffee shop unanimously approved

Coffee, anyone? Count the ASUW in.

The ASUW Student Senate unanimously approved a resolution in favor of building a late-night coffee shop below Odegaard Undergraduate Library yesterday.

According to University library statistics, approximately 800 students visit Odegaard every night between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., said Cullen White, ASUW's director of organizational relations.

Though Odegaard operates 24 hours a day Monday through Thursday, all campus food facilities close by 11 p.m on those days.

The lack of after-hours on-campus dining options makes the coffee shop a necessity, White said.

"The closest option at that time is the Starbucks in U. Village," White said. "No one wants to walk down there when it's cold, or go wait for a bus. When you're doing your work, you want to be efficient."

Placing a store directly below the library would also help students stay safe after dark, said Jonathan Lee, ASUW's director of faculty, administration and academic affairs.

"Right now, students have to walk to the Ave. when they're hungry at night," Lee said. "It'd be better if they could just grab food and coffee from downstairs."

White first proposed the project in his May campaign platform. He said he has been working with Paul Brown, director of Housing and Food Services, to create a budget breakdown for the project since October.

The ASUW Board of Directors will review a break-even analysis for the coffee shop during its meeting Thursday.
