Huskies fall in both polls

The Washington men's basketball team slipped two spots to No. 12 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll and three places to No. 13 in the Associated Press poll in the two polls' latest rankings.

The Huskies (17-3 overall, 7-2 Pac-10) split their two games last weekend, falling to Arizona 91-82 last Thursday and defeating Arizona State 79-70 Sunday.

The Wildcats are the only other Pac-10 school in both polls -- No. 13 in the Coaches and No. 14 in the AP.

Illinois remained No. 1 in both polls, and has now held the top spot in the AP poll for the ninth straight week, the longest run since Connecticut held the position for 10 weeks in 1998-1999.

This was the first week Illinois received all 72 first place ballots in the AP poll -- the first unanimous No. 1 since Duke in 2001-2002.

Washington returns to action Thursday against USC in Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

Nelson joins Mariners for third time

Pitcher Jeff Nelson agreed with the Seattle Mariners to a minor league deal yesterday.

This will be the third stint with the Mariners for Nelson, who pitched for the team from 1992 to 1995 and 2001 to 2003. Nelson told the Associated Press he contemplated retiring during the offseason.

"The teams interested weren't very appealing to me," he said. "This is one of the places I get motivated to play easily."

Nelson was 1-2 with a 5.32 ERA in 29 games with Texas last year. He is 47-41 in 690 major league games and holds the Mariners record for career games with 383. He has a 23-20 record with Seattle and was an all-star with the team in 2001.
