Huskies run for indoor titles

The Washington indoor track team will fill Dempsey Indoor today and tomorrow along with six of the top-25 teams in the nation to compete at the 2005 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The MPSF Championships offers Division I championship competition for the Big West, Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conference schools, as well as a other Western universities.

The UW women finished third in last year's MPSF Championships, behind winner Stanford and UCLA, This year, the Cardinal women are ranked No. 1 while the Bruins are also the defending NCAA outdoor champions.

The Husky men placed eighth at last year's championship with UCLA taking the title. The Bruin's men's squad will try to repeat, but face competition from No. 11 Oregon.

Several NCAA champions will participate at the championships, including Alicia Craig of Stanford and Robert Cheseret of Arizona. Craig has won two-straight NCAA titles in the 10,000-meter run, while Cheseret took the NCAA title in the 5,000-meter run.

Among the previous Pac-10 champions expected to be present at the event is Washington senior pole-vaulter Kate Soma. Soma is the current NCAA women's leader in the event.

Other Huskies to watch this weekend are freshman jumper Norris Frederick and sophomore Isaiah Stanback.

Frederick, a former standout at Roosevelt High School, is quickly building a similar reputation at the UW. Stanback, who plays quarterback on the football squad, will compete in the 60-meter dash.
