Softball ends Classic with win over Cowgirls

The Washington softball team wrapped up the Palm Springs Classic with a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma State yesterday in Cathedral City, Calif.

The No. 12 Huskies (10-5 overall) lost its first two contests last weekend against Northwestern and Texas A&M, before bouncing back with wins over Ohio State, Kansas and Oklahoma State.

The lone run yesterday came from the bat of sophomore second baseman Dominique Lastrapes who belted her first collegiate home run to lead off the fourth inning.

Senior pitcher Ashley Boek (7-2) recorded her fourth shutout of the season and allowed only one walk while surrendering just five hits. Boek tied a career-best by striking out 12 Cowgirls.

Freshman Caitlin Noble delivered an ace performance by throwing a no-hitter in the UW's 4-0 win over Kansas. marking the second time this season a no-hitter has been achieved .

Against KU, Lastrapes lined a single into centerfield to score Chartres from second. what would become the only run Washington would need to beat Kansas.

Junior first baseman Sarah Hyatt added a two-run homer in the seventh.

The UW finished the day with a 9-2 win power Ohio State with Hyatt and Minor each having four RBIs

The UW opened the Classic with a 3-2 loss to Northwestern last Friday. The Huskies got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with senior catcher Kristen Rivera's seventh home run of the season.

The Wildcats recorded their first hit in the fourth inning with a line drive single to left field. The next batter reached on an error by Hyatt and the next NU batter followed with a homerun to give Northwestern the 3-1 lead.

The Huskies climbed back to within one run with an RBI from Lastrapes, but could get no closer.

The UW was then pounded by Texas A&M 10-0 in last Friday's second game.

Down 1-0, Noble sat the first two batters down in order to lead off the second inning but the next 10 batters reached base and scored six runs. She took the loss as she allowed five hits and seven runs while striking out four in just 2.2 innings. The game was called by the mercy rule in the fifth inning.

Washington travels to another tournament this weekend in Las Vegas to participate in the Las Vegas Classic beginning Friday.
