UW downs Ducks, falls to Tech

The Washington men's tennis team ended its 11-match home stand by earning a split last weekend at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The No. 15 Huskies (9-2) closed out the weekend with a victory over No. 48 Oregon yesterday, but No. 56 Texas Tech handed the UW its second loss of the season Friday.
Against the Ducks, Washington came out looking to respond to the loss, and they did just that. The Huskies beat Oregon 6-1.
"I think today our guys were committed to playing a certain way from the beginning throughout the matches, until the end," coach Matt Anger said. "That was a change I felt from Friday, where we were getting down on ourselves, and we weren't consistent because we didn't really stay committed with what we were doing."
In doubles play, the UW took 2-of-3 to grab a 1-0 lead as senior Alex Vlaski and sophomore Daniel Chu defeated Oregon's Chad Wilson and Aaron Spencer 8-4. Sophomore Alex Slovic and freshman Andy Kuharszky won their match 8-5 over Thomas Bieri and Vlad Pino.
Oregon could not handle the Huskies in singles play, as the Huskies won 5-of-6 matches. Senior Pete Scharler got the ball rolling as he defeated Wilson 6-2, 6-0.
"We had a tough loss on Friday, and the important thing was to come back and get a victory," Scharler said. "We came back today really strong. Everyone was focused, and we did a really good job today."
The only loss for Washington yesterday was a close match by Vlaski as he fell to No. 20 Sven Swinnen 6-4, 4-6 and 3-6. It was Vlaski's first loss of the season in singles play as his record now stands at 9-1.
Friday was an entirely different story against the Red Raiders, as the UW fell 3-4. Washington stumbled out of the gates in doubles, as Slovic and Kuharszky was the only Husky doubles pair too pick up a win, defeating Bojan Szumanski and Michael Innerebner 9-7.
Things were looking more promising in singles play as the Huskies took a 3-2 lead when senior Christoph Palmanshofer defeated Jakub Paulsen 6-1, 6-7, 6-1. However, Kuharszky lost to Adrian Prpic, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1, and Chu was defeated by Esat Tanik, 6-4, 6-7 (7) and 6-4 to end the Huskies' chances.
"We were inconsistent with our play and what we were doing; we let ourselves slide from time to time," Anger said of the loss. "We have our excuses. We've had guys that are hurt, and we have different issues, but everybody has those things and we have to fight through that."
Washington plays on the road for the first time this year March 6 when they face San Diego State in San Diego.
