Washington drops two of three in Texas
February 28, 2005
The Washington baseball team had an up and down last weekend at the Dominos Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic in College Station, Texas.
The No. 19 Huskies (3-6 overall) fell in the first two games, dropping last Friday's game 10-4 to No. 11 Texas A&M and 5-4 to Evansville in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader. In the second game, the UW defeated the Aggies 1-0.
Rain last Saturday washed out the doubleheader scheduled with Evansville and San Diego.
The Huskies wrap up the tournament with a doubleheader today against San Diego.
Sophomore pitcher Tim Lincecum (1-2) had his first strong outing of the season, blanking Texas A&M 1-0 yesterday. The sophomore starter gave up just two hits and one walk, while fanning seven Aggie batters.
The Huskies scored the game's only run in the fourth inning. Sophomore designated hitter Curt Rindal singled to left field to drive in senior Taylor Johnson
Although tighter, the UW's first game yesterday against Evansville produced the same result as the one last Friday.
Offensive struggles continued for the Huskies, who were held hitless in the final five innings.
Evansville starter Michael Greenhouse (3-0) pitched five innings, allowing four runs in the second, but retired the final 11 UW batters he faced.
The Huskies loaded the bases on two singles and a hit batter to open the second. Junior shortstop Brent Lillibridge stroked a double, scoring all three runners. Freshman catcher Joey Dunn followed with a single to drive home Lillibridge, giving the Huskies the early 4-2 advantage.
The Purple Aces quickly answered, scoring a run in the third. In the sixth, Robbie Minor singled up the middle driving in the tying run. The next hitter, Joe Tautges, hit a grounder to first. With a runner charging home from third, first baseman Larsen threw the ball home. but the run was called safe on a close play to give Evansville a 5-4 lead
Control continued to be a problem for UW starter sophomore Kyle Parker (1-2) who took the loss last Friday, allowing five first inning runs.
The UW never made it a game, as the Aggies added a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to go up 7-1. The Huskies score one run in the eighth and two in the ninth, but it was not enough to close the gap.
