March 1, 2005
The Washington baseball team capped an up-and-down weekend with a split in yesterday's doubleheader against San Diego in the Dominos Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic in College Station, Tex.
The No. 19 Huskies (4-7 oveall) won the first game 4-1, and dropped the second 3-0 with both games being seven inning affairs.
Yesterday's doubleheader was a result of a rainout last Saturday. The Huskies finished the tournament with a 2-3 record.
Washington makes its Husky Ballpark debut at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow against St. Martin's.
In the opening game, senior pitcher David Dowling (1-0) threw his first career complete game, allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out seven Torero batters.
San Diego's starter Sean Warlop took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings.
Washington jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two-out singles from senior third baseman Nick Batkoski and junior center fielder Nick Burnham each drove in runs.
San Diego cut the lead in the top half in the sixth, picking up a run on Steve Singleton's double.
The Huskies quickly answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. After right fielder Taylor Johnson walked, Warlop was relived by Nicholas Cranmer.
Cramer then gave up a two-run homer to the firstbatter he face, junior shortstop Brent Lillibridge. The roundtripper was Lillibridge's first this season.
Game two of the doubleheader proved to be a no-show for the Husky offense as the UW ended the Classic with a 4-0 loss.
San Diego reliever Matt Falk picked up the win after one and one-third innings. Start Matt Couch held the Huskies scoreless through five and two-thirds innings but left the game with the Huskies still scoreless.
UW freshman pitcher Matt Hague suffered the loss after giving up three runs relieving junior starter Keaton Everitt. Everitt pitched four scoreless innings with three stikeouts.
The game was scoreless until the sixth when the Toreros broke through for the game's only runs. Randy Curtis doubled with the bases empty and two men out. After two walks, senior Josh Conover relieved Hague.
Conover's first pitch to pinch hitter Logan Gelbrich was flared down the right-field line, dropping just fair and driving in all three runs.
Washington first threatend in the fourth when Lillibridge walked an advanced to second on a Larson groundout. Lillibridge attempted to steal third but was thrown out by the catcher.
