Huskies cold in the desert

Freshman Zach Bixler had a hot hand while the Huskies continued to struggle as a team at the Wal-Mart National Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.

Bixler's 4-under par with 68 was good enough to enter him into a six-way tie for ninth place on the leader board. Sophomore Alex Prugh slipped seven places in the individual rankings to 15th overall as he shot 1-over par with 73 after being in a five-way tie for eighth place Sunday. Junior James Lepp slightly improved his shooting yesterday with a 2-over par and is now shooting six-over for the tournament. Lepp tied for first at last week's Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore. that the Dawgs won.

Washington, as a team, ironically moved up one spot in the tournament, shooting 5-over par with 581 after bringing up the end of the pack Sunday only shooting 2-over par.

Freshman Sterling Clark and sophomore Erik Olson were tied with a 4-over par. Clark and Lepp are tied at 150 for the tournament thus far.

Assistant coach Jon Reehoorn sounded mildly frustrated with the Huskies' disappointing play.

"Today was just another one of those days that was just so-so," he said. "[Coach] Matt [Thurman] told me today that he is excited to get the guys home for a couple of weeks ... he sees so many things that the team can improve on as we get ready to make our push towards a seventh-straight NCAA championship performance."

Last year, the Dawgs finished fourth at this tournament on the strong play of the now-graduated Brock MacKenzie who shot 7-under par with 209. They were also carried on the strong play of Prugh, who had two rounds of 2-under and 1-under par before cooling off in the final round, shooting 2-over par. His hot play didn't carry over a year later.

The Wal-Mart National Invitational wraps up tomorrow with the final 54 holes.
