Is that pot in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

UW Police Department Officers were dispatched to a room in the north tower of McCarty Hall to investigate a report of the smell of marijuana at 12:15 a.m. on March 20.

When officers reached the room, two men left and shut the door. The officers immediately smelled the marijuana and asked the two men to return to the room they had just left. The two men told the officers that they did not live in the room but were visiting a friend.

When officers knocked on the door, a woman exited the room and quickly shut the door behind her. When officers informed the woman that they smelled marijuana coming from her room she and the two males denied having smoked marijuana in the room. After further questioning the trio admitted to having smoked marijuana earlier in the evening.

An officer took one of the men down the hallway and informed him that he thought he was concealing marijuana because of a "bulge" in his pocket. The officer told the man that if he turned in his marijuana he would only receive a warning. The man produced a clear film canister from his pocket that held a small amount of marijuana.

All of the individuals were informed that Housing and Food Services would be informed and a police report would be made up documenting the incident.

The marijuana was transported to UWPD headquarters and booked into evidence for destruction.

Costly chase

A motorist who said the vehicle behind him had been following him for 30 minutes flagged a UWPD officer down on Northeast Pacific Street on March 20.

When the officer contacted the driver of the Honda Civic behind the man's car, he was "evasive to the questioning," but stated that he thought he knew the occupants of the vehicle.

The man reported that the following of his vehicle was "suspicious" but in no way threatening and was allowed to leave the scene.

The driver of the Civic -- during a routine check -- was found to have an expired license and no proof of insurance or vehicle registration. The man was written up for a $1,076 ticket for having no valid license or insurance.

'Sharp objects' spur mischief

UWPD officers found sharp objects used for two separate acts of vandalism of property on the UW campus.

The first occurred sometime between March 18 and 21. An unknown subject used some type of tool to etch a graffiti tag into the mirror of the men's restroom on the second floor of Denny Hall. UWPD estimated the damage at $150.

The second incident occurred sometime between the hours of 6:50 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on March 23. An unknown subject used a sharp object to scratch the side of a vehicle while it was parked in the N21 parking lot. The scratch was along the driver's side of the vehicle and stretched all the way from the front bumper to the rear door. The vehicle also had the letter "F" scratched into the driver's side door. UWPD estimated the value to be $250.
