Free parking on the decline

Finding a free parking space in the U-District may get a little more difficult in the near future.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will install pay stations along additional streets in the neighborhood. These areas currently allow unrestricted or free time-limited parking.

According to Mary Catherine Snyder, SDOT's senior transportation planner, the change is designed to promote a higher rate of parking turnover within the area's business district, which is the transportation department's top priority.

"On-street parking in the U-district is often packed," she said.

Snyder said the specific blocks chosen for metered parking will be released in a mailing next week. While Snyder would not say exactly where parking spaces would be converted, she said the plan has been scaled back from SDOT's original proposal,

"We had proposed a pretty large area," said Snyder.

The original plans called for paid parking to be installed along Roosevelt Way south of Ravenna Boulevard and 11th Avenue Northeast from Northeast 43rd Street to 50th Street. The plan also would have extended pay stations two blocks west along Northeast 47th Street, and on streets near the Ship Canal.

The project is part of a three-year, $10.3 million plan to replace Seattle's single-space parking meters to pay stations -- currently underway in the U-District -- while adding new paid parking in business districts.
