Seattle's vibrant tempo will get an addition this week, with a cosmopolitan blend of blues at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley. The venue hosts a two-night engagement featuring blues legend John Hammond.

Touring in support of his latest album, In Your Arms Again, Hammond will appear solo July 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. The album is an eclectic blend of acoustic country and electric urban blues, including covers of Ray Charles and Bob Dylan songs. Hammond's tour starts this week in New York and continues across North America with a single European performance in Antwerp, Belgium.

"I wouldn't miss this show," said Brent Roozen, UW medical student and blues fan. "I've seen [Hammond] twice before."

Hammond didn't buy his first guitar until he was 18, but within three years he was accomplished enough to share a 1963 Newport Folk Festival gig with music icons like Mississippi John Hurt and the Reverend Gary Davis. Since then, he has inspired audiences through four decades of musical transformation.

A Grammy Award winner, four-time Grammy Award nominee and recipient of multiple other awards, Hammond has recorded more than 25 albums and shared the stage with blues greats like Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf.

"The blues are a fading tradition, and Hammond continues to keep the tradition alive," said Roman White, a recent UW graduate.

Hammond's musical evolution gave him a voice that continues to resonate in the souls of listeners. His career is a prime example of this timeless art that so seamlessly expresses the ebb and flow of human pathos.

Dimitrious Jazz Alley is a smoke free environment, with an appetizing menu of Northwest fare. Entrees are a little out of the normal college budget, ranging from $19 to $28, but the menu features Alaskan salmon and halibut, Hood canal clams and Walla Walla Sweet onions. The extensive wine list offers a variety of Northwest, Californian, French and Italian reds and whites, by the glass or bottle.
