The UW's athletic program placed 14th out of 300 Division IA schools in the 2005 Sports Academy Directors' Cup.

The UW's year was highlighted by some of the deepest tournament runs that UW teams have seen. Men's basketball garnered the most attention, capturing a No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed and advancing to the Sweet 16. The volleyball team made its first Final Four appearance, men's golf came in third nationally, women's soccer advanced to the Elite Eight and crew finished ninth in the nation.

The Directors' Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the United States Sports Academy and USA Today. Stanford took the title for the 11th consecutive year. Other top Pac-10 schools included UCLA at third, USC at 10th, Arizona State at 11th, California at 15th and Arizona in 18th.
