4,800 left without power in U-District outage
August 3, 2005
About 4,800 households in the U-District area went without power Monday afternoon after a construction accident.
A crane performing construction for a private contractor under the ship canal on North Lake Way by 7th Avenue accidentally snapped an overhead power line, said Dan Williams a spokesperson for City Light.
"It was frustrating because I was working at home today and I couldn't use my computer - I had to halt my work," said Darrell Kelly, a junior in the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Williams said 90 percent of power was restored by 2:45 p.m., and the last homes regained power by 4 that evening.
"All the light signals went out so it was crazy driving on the road. A lot of people were confused and not stopping where traffic lights normally are," said Kelly.
The power outage affected Northeast 65th Street to Pacific Way and 22nd Avenue Northeast to 4th Avenue Northeast. The outage did not affect the UW campus.
The City Light power crew went out to fix the power outage but had to de-energize the broken power line and reconnect it after re-routing the areas that lost power to other lines, said Williams.
"I was very impressed with how quickly the power was restored - I was afraid I would miss my soaps, but the power came back on just in time," said UW sophomore Erika Van Merr.
