Identity at the Center UW grads make their debut at the Ethnic Cultural Theatre

Most students struggle to find soul mates at a university of 40,000 people. Some, however, come in with a involuntary match. Woombies, created and produced by UW alumni and wrapping up its last performances at the Ethnic Cultural Theatre (ECT) this weekend, explores the complication of going through college as a twin.

The play is written and performed by Andrea Bonner and directed by Nikki Przasnyski, both UW drama alumni. The pair decided to turn Bonner's experiences as a twin into a one-woman play while in a solo performance class. Originally it was a five-minute piece, but after graduating in 2003 it grew into a full-length production.

Bonner also had experience working at the ECT, and based on her connection to the venue felt it was a good place for the production.

"It's a very cool space, and they tend to put on productions that are not mainstream," she said. The pair also wanted the play accessible to UW students, to show students what recent graduates were capable of.

"We thought it was a good example of where your learning at the University can apply to your future career endeavors," Bonner said.

"If you want to do theater, do it. If the opportunity isn't there, do it yourself," she said. "One thing UW drama really impressed upon us was that you don't need to wait for someone else to provide that perfect audition, that perfect show."

Woombies plays today and tomorrow at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the ECT. Regular student admission is $7, but mention you read about the performance in The Daily and get in for $5! More information is available at we3productions.org.
