Runway 101: Black is the new black

As models stomp the runways of the New York fall fashion week, and students stomp the paths of the quad, this season's outfits deliver a clear message: black is back. This rich, sultry color should be a staple in everyone's wardrobe. It's easy to mix and match with a variety of trends this fall -- so you can spend less time stressing about outfits and more time stressing about class.

But while black may be back, don't be in a hurry to throw out your colorful tops and dresses. Blend your favorite boho skirt and vintage-fit color tee with some new black and you are ready to go.

The first step toward getting your closet back in shape for fall is to invest in a black fitted uniform jacket, Victorian velvet blazer or a military peacoat to keep you warm on those windy afternoons. For those afraid of the cold winter weather, a full-length tweed coat that hits between the knee and ankle is an excellent alternative.

Learn how to dress up and dress down for the right occasion. Contrast that outerwear with an ivory button-down shirt for the professional office setting, and a vintage-fit colored tee for a fun and casual look on the weekends.

Depending on preference, you can match your black top with a pair of distressed low-rise bootcut jeans to elongate those legs, or opt for a full skirt if you want to accentuate the waistline and create the illusion of a softer silhouette.

The next step is to pull out those metallic boots and comfy flats, as they are back in fashion once again. Knee-high boots and wedge soles are the perfect footwear to finish a glamorous fall look, and also add a couple of inches in height.

While it is important to understand how you can work the hot fashion trends into your wardrobe, you should always remember to make fashion your own. One way to do this is with accessories you love. Experiment with a hammered silver cuff bracelet, embroidered belt or a plunge-neck necklace of turquoise nuggets to add an extra sparkle and express your individual style.

And fit those heavy textbooks neatly into a practical and stylish hobo bag for easier, classier transportation -- now that your bags are packed, you are all set for fall quarter.
