UW hosts Indoor Invite Invitational
January 27, 2006
For the Husky track and field team, its last meet was just a preview of what is going to happen this weekend. Starting Friday night, the Huskies will face some of the best college track stars in the country.
This weekend, the UW hosts the fifth annual UW Indoor Invitational, held at Dempsey Indoor. The track team will race against Pac-10 schools such as UCLA, California, Stanford, Arizona and Oregon.
"This is going to be a different level of competition," said coach Greg Metcalf, "It is going to be high-caliber and high-quality. I'm excited; it should be a better display of our team."
The Huskies have some opportunities for outstanding performances. All-American Junior Ashley Lodree will be competing for the first time this season in the 60-meter hurdles. She will compete against another All-American, Dawn Harper, from UCLA. However, Lodree does not let the competition psych her out.
"I'm not thinking about the competition this weekend," Lodree said, "I am just going to run my race with confidence and aggression and do what I've been practicing."
Lodree knows what her goals are and keeps each meet in perspective. Instead of focusing on the competition, she will race on Saturday to qualify for the preliminary Indoor Nationals.
"I want to win a national championship," she said.
The meet on Saturday will be her first step toward that goal.
Junior Ryan Brown and sophomore Austin Abbott, who are both seated well in the 800-meter dash, are other Huskies to watch this weekend. Brown was the Pac-10 800-meter champion last year and will show the conference Saturday that he's back again.
Redshirt freshman Liz Fuller and freshman Daria Pavlov will compete in the Pentathlon for the Huskies. Metcalf is excited to see them compete.
"This meet is all about running your event for the first time," he said.
Another highlight of the meet should come in Friday night's distance relay, where Washington will have a good match-up against Stanford, UCLA and Cal.
This is a big weekend for the team. It is the first chance to show the Pac-10 their talent and potential.
"It's going to be a great meet," Metcalf said.
