The Seattle City Council filled a vacant seat Friday from a list of six finalists announced early last week.

Sally J. Clark was chosen to fill Council Position 9, vacated by Councilman Jim Compton, who resigned in December. The remaining eight members voted 6-2 for Clark's interim appointment.

Clark, 39, comes to the council from the Lifelong AIDS Alliance, where she has worked since 2004. She previously worked as an aide in both the Seattle and King County councils.

Her appointment does not mean she will serve the remainder of Compton's term. To win a full four-year term, Clark would have to win election this year for the final year of the term, then another next November for a full, four-year Council term.

Ninety-eight applicants applied for the interim position early this month. The list was cut to 14 finalists on Jan. 17, and six finalists were chosen Feb. 23.

Clark will be officially sworn in as a member of the Seattle City Council Feb. 6.
