After getting toppled in the opening game of the season, the Wildcats have responded well, ripping off six in a row. Lute Olsen's young squad is gathering steam again and climbing the rankings behind the solid play of Marcus Williams and freshman stand-out Chase Budinger.

Oregon gets the bump because of an early undefeated record. Maintaining that may be more of a challenge for the Ducks, who are loaded but lack real experience. They have already tried on their Cinderella shoes, but they look more like giant-killers by beating Georgetown and its 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert.

Low and behold, the Cougars are sitting at No. 5 in the Pac-10 and have notched Gonzaga on their belt of early season victories to boot. Under the younger and still excruciatingly boring style of Tony Bennett, WSU is requiring teams to beat them with stifling defense and precise shooting.

The Golden Bears are showing that life without Leon Powe is not as easy as their record looks. At 6-2 and as the champions of the Great Alaska Shootout, Cal will not be a team to take lightly. But with Ayinde Ubaka as the only reliable shooter, it could be a tough year.

The Trojans are making good on their dark horse label by beginning the season with a 5-2 record. The losses have not been unexpected, and they beat the teams they need to beat. And this is all without one of the best players in the Pac-10, junior Gabe Pruitt. Once he comes back from academic suspension, this team could open some eyes.

As long as the Beavers beat the teams they should beat, all will be fine for coach Jay John. When they start losing to SE Louisiana and Hawaii, though, that's when the panic should start to set in. If only Gary Payton and Brent Barry's kids were in college soon; that would help.
