[img1]The Washington baseball team (18-9 overall, 1-2 Pac-10) won six of 10 games over finals week and spring break. Three of the five victories came from an offensive-laden three-game sweep over Santa Clara, and the final win avoided a sweep against Cal.
The weekend of March 10-12, the Huskies took down Santa Clara in three straight at Husky Ballpark, outscoring the Broncos 36-23. Sophomore third baseman Matt Stevens led the Husky attack by going 7-11 with four homeruns, six runs scored and 10 RBIs.
The Friday score was 15-13, followed by 14-10 Saturday and 9-0 Sunday.
Next, the Huskies hosted Cal Poly for three. The UW fell to the Mustangs in the first two games, but took the third to avoid the sweep, winning 9-8 in the tenth inning.
Washington was down 8-4 in the eighth when sophomore Andy Lentz hit a game-tying grand slam. Junior Curt Rindal followed it with a walk-off single in the tenth. Sophomore closer Elliott Cribby shut out Cal Poly for the final two and a third innings to record the victory.
[img2]This past weekend, the Huskies traveled to Berkeley, Calif. for the opener of their Pac-10 season with three games against Cal. Washington dropped the Friday and Saturday games 9-3 and 2-1. Freshman Tyler Cheney allowed just two runs in 6.2 innings, but took the loss in Saturday's game.
Sunday's contest saw the UW take a 2-0 lead after four. In the fifth, sophomore outfielder Matt Hague belted a homer to give the UW a 4-0 lead. The final score was 5-0. Junior Tim Lincecum pitched eight shutout innings and struck out eight.
"It was a good game for us," said coach Ken Knutson. "We needed to salvage a win for the weekend. We played awfully well defensively and outstanding on the mound. Timmy just got the job done. All things said it was disappointing to go 1-2 but we are learning some stuff about ourselves."
