Huskies' Roy named first-team All-American
March 28, 2006
Apparently the rest of the country does know basketball is played on the West Coast.
Despite much speculation that Washington guard Brandon Roy was overlooked the entire season -- not being seen on ESPN or written about in national publications -- the senior star was voted an Associated Press first-team All-American yesterday.
Gonzaga's Adam Morrison, Villanova's Randy Foye and Duke's dynamic duo of J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams join Roy on the five-man team.
Roy becomes the first Husky to earn this prestigious honor since Bob Houbregs was named to the first team in 1953.
The first-team selection was well deserved.
Roy averaged 20.2 points and 4.1 assists per game. He was also the leader of a Husky squad that nearly upset No. 1 Connecticut in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
On March 6 Roy was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year, after finishing the 2006 conference campaign among the leaders in eight of the 13 major statistical categories.
Though his Washington career is over, NBA draft experts project the 6-feet-6-inch Roy as a lottery pick.
