UW swimmers to compete in USA National Championships
March 29, 2006
[img1]Although team competition has ended for the Washington swim teams, 17 Huskies will compete in the 2006 U.S. Spring National Championship in Federal Way, Wash., which started yesterday and continues through Saturday.
The nine women and eight men representing the Huskies this week are among 700 swimmers at the meet. The meet is one of three that USA Swimming will sanction this year.
Swimmer Pat Penoyar had to withdraw from the competition after coming down with mononucleosis. Mono has hurt both the men's and women's teams this season. Standouts Scott Spansail and Caitlyn Shortt were diagnosed with the illness late in the 2006 campaign and had to sit out from UW meets.
For the women, freshman Kim Jasmer will compete in four events: the 50-, 100-, 200- and 400-yard freestyle races. Brittany Epperson will also be representing Washington. Epperson competed in the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in earlier in March, placing 45th in the 100 freestyle.
For the UW men, sophomore Bret Lundgaard will swim in the 100 and 200 butterfly races, as well as the 200 individual medley. Ivan Perhat will be the other UW swimmer to compete in three races: the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and the 100-yard butterfly.
