UW's Mackenzie wins Pac-10 title

[img1]All-American senior Paige Mackenzie chose a perfect time to get back under par at this week's Pac-10 Championship in Oro Valley, Ariz.
The senior won the Pac-10 Individual Title with a 5-under performance, her first sub-par tournament since October. Mackenzie finished both Monday and Tuesday's rounds in sole possession of second place, with back-to-back 1-under 71s, but broke out during Wednesday's final round.
Mackenzie's 3-under 69 was the second-best single round score of the tournament and the best of the final day. When leader Aimee Cochran of UCLA lost her stroke -- she held the top spot at 3-under before shooting a 7-over on Wednesday -- it allowed Mackenzie to reach the top of the leader board.
"This just puts an exclamation point on Paige's great career," coach Mary Lou Mulfur told Gohuskies.com. "It's certainly the biggest individual win for any player on the women's side in the history of our program."
Mackenzie stayed ahead of UCLA's Alissa Kuczka, who was one stroke back on the 18th hole. Kuczka's bogey on the par-4 18th gave Mackenzie a two-stroke lead.
The Huskies finished in sixth place as a team, the same position as last season. The team's 46-over score was 31 strokes behind UCLA, which edged Arizona State by one stroke for the team win.
Husky junior Amber Prange continued her strong play at this tournament, finishing with a 1-over 73. Prange was 1-under going into the 17th hole, but closed out the tournament with consecutive bogeys. She finished in a tie for 13th place at 9-over.
Junior Courtney McCracken finished at 19-over -- just ahead of senior Sung Ea Lee at 24-over. Sophomore Kim Shin finished fifth for the Huskies at 40-over.
