13-year-old competes for ill mother

In a feel-good story for the ages, 13-year-old Dakoda Dowd was granted permission to participate in the LPGA Ginn Clubs & Resorts Open yesterday because she was playing for her terminally ill mother, Kelly Jo. The older Dowd is fighting cancer for the second time and may have few months to live. The LPGA made an exception for the young star so her mother could watch her compete. Dowd did remarkably well in what was her first professional event, carding a 2-over 74 at the course in Reunion, Florida. "Fantabulous," Kelly Jo told the Associated Press afterwards. "I have to make up my own vocabulary to describe it."

Williams may play in Canada

Ricky Williams might play football in 2006 after all. Suspended by the NFL for the 2006 campaign, the running back is receiving interest from the Canadian Football League (CFL). The Toronto Argonauts have placed Williams on its negotiation list, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reported, meaning it is the only team that can have contract talks with him. Williams can seek reinstatement to the NFL after this year.
