Rivalry time for UW track and field
April 28, 2006
[img1]No college team is more of a rival to Washington than Washington State. This weekend, the Husky track and field team will travel to Pullman to face its rival in the 91st UW vs. WSU dual meet. With a No. 19 ranking for the men and the No. 21 position for the women, the Huskies have a good shot at repeating last year's win.
The Cougars lead the men's all-time series 57-32-1. On the women's side, the Huskies have a 19-11 lead, but the WSU women have won eight of their past nine meetings.
The Husky men head to Pullman already boasting impressive dual-meet victories. During the indoor season, the men defeated seven of eight Pac-10 squads for the MPSF Indoor Conference title at Dempsey Indoor. The win marked the first conference title of any kind for the Husky men since 1928. They carried their success to the outdoor season by upsetting Oregon at the Pepsi Invitational in early April.
One athlete that has added greatly to the UW track team's success is fifth-year senior Will Conwell. Conwell was just named Pac-10 Athlete of the Week for his outstanding performance in the discus event last weekend in Southern California. Conwell's throw of 200 feet, 1 inch was a lifetime best and ranks him sixth in the NCAA.
Senior Shane Charles, junior Martin Bingisser and sophomore Norris Frederick are all ranked on the Trackwire collegiate rankings, which predict team scores at the NCAA Championships. Charles earned eight points and a predicted eighth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, while Bingisser and Frederick earned mentions with 11th-place predictions. Conwell was also predicted for a No. 2 finish in the discus.
The Husky women also scored some points in Trackwire. Junior Ashley Lodree scored four with a projected fifth-place finish in the hurdles. Junior Amy Lia also received mention with a projected 10th-place finish in the 1,500 meters.
The women will face some tough competition from WSU twins Julie and Diana Pickler -- both NCAA qualifiers in the combined events.
"I think if the girls compete up to their potential they are capable of beating [WSU]," said junior Ryan Brown.
The reigning Pac-10 and NCAA Regional Champion in the 800 meters. Brown will be competing in that event Saturday.
"I think [as a men's team] we are way better than them now," he said. "Anything from the 400 up they can't beat us and we've got guys that can run with them in the sprints. We have no weaknesses."
