Fire damages fraternity bedroom
May 1, 2006
A halogen lamp started a fire in the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity Saturday that caused no injuries, but rendered one bedroom "pretty fucked," said fraternity president Nick Wellington.
The fire began when the lamp made contact with one fraternity member's bedding and spread to another part of the room, Wellington said.
Members of the fraternity responded immediately by pulling the fire alarm and evacuating.
"We only had one person who had a blister from a burn or something," Wellington said.
The damage could have been much worse if the incident occurred during the evening when residents were asleep, said Chief Bruce Amer of the Seattle Fire Department.
"They were very fortunate it happened during the day and not at night when more people were in there," Amer said.
