Long year comes to a close

This wasn't the way the UW planned for its season to go. Entering the year ranked 25th with expectations of finishing in the middle of the Pac-10, the Huskies didn't live up to their billing.

At the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. last weekend, the UW's effort was there, but winning results were not.

Only senior Dinka Hadzic, sophomore Tara Simpson and freshman Tori Brymer were entered into the event's main draw in singles for the Huskies. Hadzic and Brymer were the only UW players in the main draw for doubles.

Any chance of a Husky miracle run last Thursday in singles was quickly dashed. Each UW player lost in straight sets. Stanford's Theresa Logar took care of Hadzic 6-2, 6-1.

Arizona State's Roxanne Clarke polished off Simpson 6-3, 6-2. Clarke's teammate, Sabrina Capannolo, knocked Brymer out 6-2, 6-2.

The lone positive of the opening day of action was senior Stephanie Svanfeldt's 6-2, 7-6 victory over Oregon's Jamie Marshall in the first round of the invitational draw. She then ran into No. 76 Jessica Nguyen in the Round of 16 and lost 6-2, 6-0.

Friday went a little bit better for Washington. Despite Hadzic and Brymer losing their first round doubles match to UCLA in the main draw, Simpson and Svanfeldt gave the UW its first victory over No. 1 Stanford all year, defeating Megan Doheny and Jessica Leck 8-3.

Brymer also won her first consolation singles match, defeating Stephanie Balzert of Arizona 6-2, 6-4.

Simpson and Svanfeldt were defeated in the quarterfinals of the doubles draw, falling to California.
