The Washington men's track and field team reclaimed its title as the best team in the state Saturday at the UW versus WSU dual meet in Pullman. The Huskies defeated the Cougars 112-91 while the women's team fared well but lost to its cross-state rival 111.5-91.5.

The men's victory was the first in Pullman since 2000, and just its fifth at WSU since World War II.

"Our men's team is really firing up on all cylinders right now," coach Greg Metcalf told gohuskies.com. "I don't know that I've ever been around a men's team with a stronger desire to win. It's fun to watch and it's going to make for a great time at the Pac-10 meet in two weeks."

The men's team's success was due to wins in 12 of the 19 events. Fifth-year senior Will Conwell swept the shot put and the discus, and sophomore Norris Frederick who won the long jump and tied with teammate, Warren Eickhoff in the high jump.

The most outstanding performance on the men's side came from senior Shane Charles in the 400-meter hurdles. Charles crossed the finish line first with a time of 50.18 seconds, beating the meet record time of 50.76 that he set in 2005. Charles's time ranks him second in the nation in the event.

On the women's side, junior Ashley Lodree helped her team greatly in the 100-meter hurdles by setting meet and stadium records with a winning time of 13.25 seconds. She also had a victory in the 100-meter dash and anchored the 4-by-400 meter relay team to a second place finish.

Also stepping up on the women's side was senior Lauren Dignam, who set a UW record in the 400-meter dash. Dignam's time was only good enough for second in the meet, but earned her a Regional qualifying mark.

Other NCAA Regional qualifiers included red shirt freshmen Sheree Ellis in the shot put, senior Phil McCary in the 400-meter hurdles and the men's 4-by-100 meter relay squad of Charles, sophomore Jordan Boase and juniors Alex Hartcourt and Isaiah Stanback.

The Washington track and field team will be home this weekend for the third annual Ken Shannon Invitational at Husky Stadium. Then it is off to Eugene, Ore. for the Pac-10 Championships.
