This week in indie rock
August 2, 2006
An album of English-language covers of French poet, singer and actor Serge Gainsbourg has been released recently on the Verve label, titled Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited.
The album is an eclectic smorgasbord of artists, including Franz Ferdinand, Cat Power with British supermodel Karen Elson, Portishead, Tricky, Marianne Faithfull, Placebo and Gonzales, Feist & Dani, to name a few.
Tonight, local act Mon Frere brings its Halloweencore synth rock to El Corazon along with Last Ditch Effort. Not long ago, Mon Frere was playing modest shows at the Vera, but has garnered appreciable local attention. Still in relative nascence, they have so far produced one album, Blood, Sweat & Swords, and an EP titled Real Vampires.
Coming up on Saturday, Aug. 5, Wesley Pentz, better known as Diplo (and Diplodocus to his friends) plays Neumos. The acclaimed Philadelphia-based DJ and producer, known for his frequently idiosyncratic mashups, is sure to wow audiences.
On the same night, the ever-loved indie-pop band Velvet Teen plays the Paradox. They are currently touring in support of their recent full-length release titled Cum Laude! Joining them will be Sparrows Swarm & Sing, an instrumental post-rock-oriented quartet. Opening the night will be This Will Destroy You and Elphaba.
And if you missed them at the Capitol Hill Block Party, local hip-hop heroes Common Market will be playing Neumos on Sunday. The duo who comprise Common Market include Sabzi, whose other project is none other than UW grads Blue Scholars, and RA Scion. Also on the bill is Oakland-based hip-hop duo The Coup. Known for their politically minded lyrics, they bring a strong degree of social awareness to their art.
