Rants and Raves

rants
? Survey shows that three years after the invasion of Iraq, 50 percent of Americans still believe Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.
? Check your sheets before you go to sleep. Bedbugs, those critters that bite in the night, are making a comeback.
? An increase in skin cancer in young people may be connected to America's tanning bed obsession, Time Magazine reports.
? NASA scientists' claim there is life on Mars yet to be further supported. Sci-fi geeks sigh with disappointment.
raves
? City of Seattle issues Hempfest a permit after small legal battle that pitted the city and the Seattle Art Museum against the reefer-happy event.
? Former Husky and Seahawks quarterback Warren Moon inducted into NFL Hall of Fame.
? New study shows that depression can be alleviated with a single shot of a drug typically used as an anesthetic.
? The Mariners beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-4 Monday. Oh wait, Tampa Bay is one of the worst teams in baseball. Never mind.
Ben Golden: I'm confident the Democrats will win the 2008 election.
It's not because they have an amazing candidate waiting in the shadows. It's not because they have a great strategy to get out the vote. And, as thrilling as the lockbox was, it's certainly not because they've developed any exciting ideas in the last decade.
Brooke McKean: Farm subsidies need to end. Yes, that may mean farmers in the United States and Europe will lose their jobs, but they will instantly receive unemployment, opportunities for re-education, and their children will not starve to death.
Kelly Hills: I'm now in Albany, New York, doing a slow boil in the high heat and humidity. They assure me the weather is not normal; I suspect they're just trying to pull one on the Seattle girl.
Film: Oliver Stone's World Trade Center is overly sentimental and brings nothing new to the story of Sept. 11
This week in indie rock: A new alliance between Sub Pop and 2K Sports. Also, a new album from the Decemberists, Cat Power covers Bob Dylan at Music for Youth, Peaches at the Showbox and more
More film: Reviews of Jean-Pierre Melville's lost masterpiece Army of Shadows. Plus, a pseudo-documentary about conjoined-twin rock stars and a real-live documentary about rank-and-file solders protesting the Vietnam War
AIDS RESEARCH
The Gates Foundation donated $287 million to the quest for an AIDS vaccine. Many Seattle researchers are recipients of grants, which are going to 165 investigators from 19 countries. Each consortium of researchers will explore a different aspect of the vaccine.
NORTH OF 45TH
A committee looking into safety and noise problems north of 45th Street released its recommendations this month to improve the situation. One overwhelming suggestion is to revise the Student Conduct Code to hold students responsible for their actions off campus.
HILLEL/DOWNTOWN VIGIL
Vigils were held both at the UW and downtown in memory of the shooting at the Jewish Federation last month.
