Spinach scares some, others unaffected
September 25, 2006
Spinach may be absent from store shelves across the country, but that's not what's causing its absence from some UW students" diets.
As of Sunday, 109 cases of E. coli have been traced to tainted spinach and two produce companies have issued recalls, the Associated Press reported.
But freshman Zach Usa said even if the product were available, he wouldn't be eating it anyway.
"I don't use spinach on a daily, monthly or yearly basis," Usa said.
Freshman Kevin Aldrich also said the vegetable's unavailability has affected him very little.
"I notice when I get a salad at a place back home there's no spinach in it anymore," he said. "It's not really an issue."
E. Coli outbreaks linked to spinach have been reported in 25 states, including Washington.
The spinach, originating from Natural Selection Foods LLC of San Juan Bautista, Calif., has been confirmed as the cause of death of a woman in Wisconsin, and is suspected to be the cause of two other deaths nationwide.
