President of the UW- Mark Emmert
Mark Emmert, president of the UW, is responsible for managing all aspects of the University, including, among others, academic programs, athletics, hospitals and research. He is also the main representative for the UW to the outside world.
"It's both a large internal management job and an external development and public relations job," Emmert said.
After graduating from the UW in 1975, he became a professor at the University of Colorado and eventually became involved in the administrative field before returning to Seattle. He is beginning his third year as president.
Emmert, a native Washingtonian, said he was glad to return to his alma mater.
"One of the beauties of UW is that we're surrounded by this city that has so much cultural activity and nightlife and tourist activities," he said.
He enjoys skiing and boating and recommends that students visit the mountains and benefit from the "scenic beauty of the place."
Dick's burgers and the Duchess top his list of favorite restaurants in the area.
Emmert spent the majority of his summer traveling, both for pleasure and work. He visited China, Australia and London for business, as well as Ireland and Napa Valley for pleasure.
ASUW President- Cullen White
This year's ASUW president is senior Cullen White. As president, he serves as a representative for his organization and for all undergrads at the UW. He said he is hoping to improve the relationship between the UW and the outside community, as well as improving life for students on campus and keeping tuition affordable.
White, who is majoring in economics and political science, feels he is able to represent a large portion of the student body.
"I have toiled with financial aid, I've worked 40 hours a week to pay for school and rent, I've commuted, I've lived in residence halls and I've pledged a fraternity," White said.
White grew up in Nebraska, but moved to Issaquah when he was 15 and graduated from Skyline High.
In his spare time White likes football, traveling and cooking. After a summer trip to Ghana, he has started sewing as well.
White advised students in search of good food to visit the Hawaiian BBQ.
He suggested that students to check out the Waterfront Activities Center and go canoeing or to go to Gasworks Park at night for a good view of the city.
ASUW Arts and Entertainment Director- Abby Waysdorf
Due to her love of music, ASUW arts and entertainment director is an ideal position for senior Abby Waysdorf. She said she intends to bring various concerts, comedians and films to the UW this year and hopes to make the campus a fun place to be for students and entertainers.
Waysdorf worked as the arts and entertainment assistant last year and wanted to become more involved this year.
Born in Washington D.C. and raised in Denver, she has lived in Seattle for the past year.
She recommends visiting the different neighborhoods around Seattle, such as Capitol Hill and Fremont, in order to feel the entire atmosphere of the city.
"Seattle is a great city and the best way to experience it is to live it and make it your own," Waysdorf said.
The CHID major says Flowers has good food and good drinks but also enjoys Thai Tom's.
She began the summer by watching the World Cup and spent the rest of the summer working in Pioneer Square.
Vice Provost for Student Life- Eric Godfrey
Eric Godfrey is the vice provost for student life. He is responsible for organizing a wide range of programs for students, including admissions, financial aid, counseling, and housing and food services.
He has worked in higher education for several years and enjoys spending his career on a college campus.
Although Godfrey was born in Seattle, he left at a young age and moved around as a child. After finishing his undergraduate degree in psychology at Pacific Lutheran University and completing his graduate work in education at Penn State University, he returned to the Seattle in 1981 to join the UW community.
"I think the first thing to do for students new to Seattle, especially coming from out of state, is to learn as soon as possible to appreciate our climate," Godfrey said.
He likes spending time with his four daughters, one of whom got married this summer, as well as fly fishing and watching baseball.
General Manager of Rainy Dawg Radio- Jeffrey Echert
As the general manager for RainyDawg, Jeffrey Echert is responsible for overseeing the operation and budget of the University's student radio station. He has worked for RainyDawg Radio the entire time he's been at the UW.
Echert, a junior who is double majoring in English and journalism, hopes to reach new students and "broaden their musical horizons."
Raised in nearby Shoreline, Echert believes Seattle is an ideal city for students to get involved with music and said the EMP and Easy Street Records are definite examples of the area's love for music.
He enjoys listening to music and going to shows, in addition to writing, reading and "attempting to play the guitar."
