The season kicked off with the sixth-annual fall training camp at Fort Flagler state park during Labor Day weekend. The camp signified a way to get back in shape after summer, but more importantly it was a chance for the team to come together and bond.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
"My favorite part about training camp was getting to see old friends and having the chance to meet new people," junior Amy Lia said.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
Junior Austin Abbott said that a typical day at the camp would be to wake up, eat breakfast, run, eat dinner and then hang out by the campfire.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
After the five-day camp, the team headed home to compete in the Sundodger Invitational. The women came in a respective third, while the men lost the title for the first time in four years to Chico State.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
On the men's side, junior Carl Moe placed the highest with a sixth-place finish and Lia led the women's side with a sixth-place finish as well.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
"I was not going to run at first, but everyone else was running and I wanted to run with them," Lia said.
"It was kind of a last-minute decision."[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
With a new season came new teammates as well. The men welcomed five new freshmen while the women have eight.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
"The new freshmen are awesome," Lia said. "They are all really talented and dedicated to what they are doing."[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
Besides adding some new freshman to the team, the Huskies also hired a new assistant coach. Jimmy Bean joined the coaching staff from Willamette University.
"Jimmy has everything we were looking for in an assistant coach," coach Greg Metcalf told GoHuskies.com. [HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
Bean helped the Willamette men place fifth at the 2005 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
"Jimmy is really cool; he is a good guy and I like him a lot," Abbott said.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
With all the right ingredients for a great season, the Huskies will gear up next for the Bill Dellinger Invitational in two weeks. As for the rest of the season, both the men and women have hopes of placing in the top 10 at NCAA.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]
