Despite dropping its first game at the Palm Springs Classic over the weekend, the 15th-ranked Washington softball team (12-2) still had a successful weekend in Cathedral City.

The Huskies went 4-1 on the weekend, bouncing back from a 4-0 loss to 10th-ranked Texas on Friday with an 8-3 win over Ole Miss in the nightcap. The UW won two more games on Saturday, besting Michigan State 4-0 and throttling Penn State mercy-rule style, 14-4. The Dawgs completed tournament play with a 5-2 win over Nevada yesterday.

Danielle Lawrie suffered her first loss of the season to the Longhorns, striking out 13 and yielding just five hits in the complete game effort. Only one of Texas' four runs was earned.

Caitlin Noble pitched the nightcap on Friday, fanning eight Rebel batters to pick up her third victory of the season. Washington's bats also came alive after being shutout earlier in the day. Dominique Lastrapes ripped a two-run triple in the third inning, and Dena Tyson belted a three-run homer in the fifth to blow the game open.

Lawrie picked up her seventh win of the season in the UW's shutout victory over MSU, and also helped her own cause by blasting a three-run homer in the fifth inning. The junior hurler struck out 11 Spartan batters and allowed only four hits on the way to recording her third shutout of the season.

In the nightcap, the UW's bats came alive once more. Tyson and Ashlyn Watson hit back-to-back homers in the third inning to give the Huskies a 5-1 lead [HTML_REMOVED] but they weren't done. The fifth inning saw Washington score five runs and send nine batters to the plate, highlighted by Lauren Greer's three run homer [HTML_REMOVED] her first of the season. Shortstop Ashley Charters was also an offensive standout, going 4-for-8 on the day.

Tyson must have thought that home runs were going out of style, as the senior first baseman blasted her third homer of the tournament and fifth of the season [HTML_REMOVED] this one a grand slam [HTML_REMOVED] in the fourth inning against the Wolfpack on Sunday. Tyson also accounted for the UW's other run, poking an RBI single through the right side of the infield in the third.

Lawrie picked up the win for the Dawgs, striking out 11 and allowing seven hits in the complete game effort to run her season record to 8-1.

For the weekend, Tyson led the Huskies with a .667 average to go along with her three homers and 10 RBI. Charters finished the tournament with a .471 average, and Alicia Matthews batted .412 on the weekend.

Washington will play its first home games next weekend as they host Portland State, LSU and North Dakota State at the Husky Classic.
