Pac - 10 Roundup
February 27, 2007
It was an unsung hero that kept WSU from being upset in Corvallis, Ore.
Aron Baynes scored a season-high 14 points and had six rebounds to help the Cougars come back from behind to defeat the Beavers 58-54 on Saturday.
Down by seven points in the second half, Baynes scored nine straight points for WSU to give the Cougars a 47-45 lead. Later, Mac Hopson hit a jumper that put the Cougars ahead for good.
With the win, WSU (23-5 overall, 12-4 Pac-10) kept its slim hopes for a conference title alive. The Cougars will have to finish the season with wins and will need UCLA to lose its last two in order to share the Pac-10 crown with the Bruins.
Marcel Jones had 16 points to lead the Beavers (11-19 overall, 3-14 Pac-10), who had beaten the Cougars eight-straight times at home.
WSU will host UCLA on Thursday; Oregon State will travel to Oregon on Saturday for its Pac-10 finale.
[HTML_REMOVED]In what was likely his last game at Pauley Pavilion, Arron Afflalo scored a team-high 20 points and secured UCLA's first undefeated home season in 32 years.
The junior will probably enter the NBA draft after the season and left the floor to thousands of fans chanting, "One more year!" after the Bruins coasted to an easy 75-61 win over Stanford on Saturday.
With the win, which made the Bruins 20-0 at home this year, UCLA (25-3 overall, 14-2 Pac-10) clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 title for the second consecutive season. The 1974-75 team, which won the NCAA championship, was the last team to go unbeaten at home.
Luc Richard Mbah a Moute added 11 points for the hosts, who had no seniors to honor on Senior Night.
Stanford (17-10 overall, 9-7 Pac-10) was led by Brook Lopez (23 points, nine rebounds) and Lawrence Hill (13 points). The Cardinal have lost four of six and committed 16 turnovers.
UCLA will try to clinch the Pac-10 title outright against WSU on Thursday; Stanford will host Arizona State.
[HTML_REMOVED]Seattle's own Lodrick Stewart made USC history on Saturday [HTML_REMOVED] during his last home game as a Trojan, no less.
The senior guard became the school's all-time leader in 3-point shooting, making his 220th career 3-pointer in an 84-66 rout of Cal in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Stewart broke Brandon Granville's record of 218 in the second half and finished 4-of-7 from behind the arc.
Taj Gibson added 18 points for the hosts on 7-of-11 shooting. Dwight Lewis had 14 and Nick Young scored 13 for USC, who completed its first season in its newly renovated arena with a 15-3 home record.
The win kept USC in sole possession of third place in the Pac-10 and likely secured them a position in the NCAA Tournament no matter what.
Cal (14-14 overall, 6-10 Pac-10) was led by Ayinde Ubaka's 15 points. Ryan Anderson had 14 and Theo Robertson added 13.
USC will finish out the regular season traveling to the Washington schools; Cal with host the Arizona schools.
[HTML_REMOVED]ASU picked up its first conference win last week. So to hope for another was just greedy.
Freshman Chase Budinger scored a game-high 23 points and the Wildcats survived a late Sun Devil run to win 61-58 in Tempe, Ariz., on Sunday.
It was Arizona's 24th win in the teams' past 25 meetings.
The Wildcats (18-9 overall, 9-7 Pac-10) led by nine with under three minutes to play, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Derek Glasser and Christian Polk pulled ASU to within three.
After a Wildcat free throw, Glasser was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and made all three shots from the line to pull the Sun Devils to within one [HTML_REMOVED] but that was the last time ASU (7-20 overall, 1-15 Pac-10) would touch the ball.
Marcus Williams added 19 points for the Wildcats. Polk led the visitors with 18.
Both teams will travel to the Bay area this week, wrapping up the regular season with away games at Stanford and Cal.
