Daily Files: Fun and frolic at Tubs

25 years ago: March 1982

A look backward in time through the yellowing pages of newsprint archives shows what The Daily and the UW looked like 25 years ago this month.

Make way, Grand Central Sauna and Hot Tubs! The luxuriant "Tubs," newly established at 50th and Roosevelt, has just made wooden steam baths and rides downtown a thing of the past for prospective UW hot tubers.

And what Tubs hasn't got, a person doesn't need. They're outfitted with all the latest innovations in pleasure tubbing, including 20 private suites with tubs sized for two to 10 people, computer read-out tub temperatures, saunas, showers, beds, cassette decks, tiled floors, dimmer lights, and, yes, even fresh-squeezed juice (watermelon is the best)brought right to your door upon intercom request.

"It was actually too luxurious to believe," UW student John Wallace remarked as he left.

According to co-owner Bill Rubin, "Tubs is probably the best place of its kind on the West Coast," because of the intensive research and planning which went into the project on the part of Rubin and co-owner Dick Patterson.

Rubin said the two looked at every conceivable hot tub establishment in California, where the trend originated, before returning to Seattle to start building Tubs a year ago.
