[HTML_REMOVED]The event, known as Washington Weekend, will showcase the University's various departments and schools as well as a series of lectures, live performances, sporting events and tours.
"It's a good opportunity to open up the campus and bring the community onto campus and see what we're doing," said Norm Arkans, director of media relations and communications at the UW.
The UW Alumni Association estimates 20,000 to 30,000 people will attend the events on campus, depending on the weather. Crowds will be entertained with a number of events, including the spring football game, live entertainment on a stage near the Health Sciences Building and the unveiling of the Department of Communication's 1957 time capsule Saturday.
"We are inviting you to enjoy and explore this world-class university in your backyard," said Jon Marmor, communications manager for the Alumni Association. "This is our one big open house. We welcome you to come check out all the fun, fascinating things going on here."
The communication department is also dedicating a new time capsule to be opened in 2057.
"[The projects] were our visions of communication in the present, what it looks like," said Alan Hui-Bon-Hoa, a senior working on the project. "It's a very broadly construed question. It was really interesting because we took on our own interpretations."
The students working on the project contributed examples of print and broadcast media, advertisements, music, Internet colloquialisms and pictures of graffiti. In order to use the contemporary technology going into the time capsule, students have speculated on also storing a computer for 50 years to run the multimedia placed in the capsule.
"It's been a lot of building and anticipation," Hui-Bon-Hoa said. "We spent all of our winter thinking of what we were going to put in there, and in the back of our minds we were thinking of what people 50 years ago were thinking as well."
They met with a person who worked on the 1957 time capsule, but specifically asked not to be informed as to the contents of the capsule.
"I have no idea what is in the 1957 time capsule, and I'm really excited to see it," said Lauren Lumbard, a junior working on the project.
Lumbard's contribution included placing pictures and biographies of famous communications moguls such as Steve Jobs in the capsule to see if they would be remembered in 2057.
To coordinate the various events going on throughout the weekend, the UW Alumni Association will provide limited shuttle service around campus and will host information booths around campus. It has also highlighted parking areas and eateries for visitors.
