Rants
Nearly 20 percent of the claimants in the Exxon-Valdez oil spill case have died. The case has dragged on since 1994, when Exxon was ordered by a federal court to pay $5 million for damages. Exxon has fought against paying because, it claims, the spill was the captain’s fault.
On Sunday night, eBay bidding ended on Washington’s high-speed passenger ferry “M.V. Chinook.” The problem? No one bid. The Washington State Ferry System is revaluating its minimum price of $4.5 million.

The numbers in this article are incorrect. Exxon was ordered to pay 2.5 billion, not $5 million. It also already paid 3.4 billion in damages to clean up the region and pay out to locals who were affected. Enough is enough even though it was a tragic accident.

They're not talking about money used to clean up the spill (which hasn't even been completely cleaned up), this is about punitive damages. Over 30,000 Natives suffered economic hardships as a direct result of this spill yet they haven't received a single cent in compensation.
